One Against The World...Part 1.0 and 1.5

ONE AGAINST THE WORLD
BY: JAMES UN

The Official NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) 2006 Production

AUTHOR'S DISCLAIMER:
The following novel is a complete work of fiction, an absolute work of fiction and not meant to be regarded as fact. All the characters, names, incidents, dialogue, and plot in this work of fiction are products of the author's imagination or are used fictitiously. Any resemblance to any actual persons, places, or events is purely coincidental.
AUTHOR’S NOTE ABOUT THIS WORK:
My first NaNoWriMo work, The Many Shades of Gray Hall, was a look into one year in the life of a fictional law school student. Astute readers, those who attend the law school I go to, will recognize the professors and students in the work of fiction. It was entertaining to write a novel about law school while in law school. I decided this year that I would not continue the Gray Hall saga to its logical conclusion—the final year of law school for my main character. Writing another 50,000+ novella about a year in law school would have been serious overkill. I doubt that I could come up with enough fictional stuff to write a decent novella about law school that would meet my standards.
What to write about? I decided that I would go off to a different genre and write about a different subject. I finally reduced my genres to action-adventure or possibly horror. The action-adventure subject quickly fizzled, as I could not come up with a satisfying plot. So it was horror so I could mess with the minds of people. The result is this work based upon a short story premise by the science fiction master, Robert A. Heinlein, but with a few little extras to make it sound new. I hope you enjoy this.
In addition, the story is told by document excerpts instead of the more traditional way of storytelling. It's different, so please bear with this.
AND NOW, WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR...PART 1.0

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The editors of this work, Christopher Xavier Jay and Franklin Appleton, would like to thank the following people, who the editors think that without their help, this work would not be in the form that it is in today. This section was the best section to write as it meant that we know we are finished. It is a great sense of accomplishment to know that you are done with a labor of love that has taken so much time.
Mr. Jay and Appleton both give their sincere thanks to the law firm of Fatani Michelson Youngstown Black LLC, especially Patrick Michelson who litigated their case against the United States Government in a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit that made its way to the United States Supreme Court. The resulting opinion for US v. Appleton, 1032 U.S. 106 (2129) is considered an important case with respect to freedom to access of information. Indeed, it is safe to say that without the help of the law firm in guiding this case throughout the legal process and winning this case at the United States Supreme Court, this work would never have been written, let alone been thought of.
Both give their sincerest thanks to the United States Supreme Court for deciding in favor of them and setting a legal precedent in their opinion. It is rare for anyone to thank the Supreme Court for a legal opinion, but this is one of those rare occasions and the editors consider this to be such an occasion. They truly consider this a step in the right direction.
Both would like to thank their agent, Ms. Katarina Dobrzova-Kassin. She was very patient while the editors came up with many futile and failed attempts at coming up with a book idea. She also had the brilliance to suggest writing about the story of David King. The result is the document that you now are reading today. Ms. Dobrzova-Kassin kept both the editors’ spirits up during the lengthy and tenuous legal process when both thought that their case was a loser.
Both would like to thank the publishing company of Kastle Publishing for considering this document a keeper and sticking with the editors during the entire legal process. Many other publishing firms would have fled if faced with such difficulties but Kastle Publishing did not during the entire process.
We also would like to thank our editor, Paul Castell, who knew what a monster he would be tackling when taking on this project. His work has been nothing short of spectacular, as well as miraculous. When dealing with such detail-obsessed and sometimes, not so detail-obsessed people like us (depending on how we feel at a certain time and never very consistent), he has been calm and rational. He has done his job with a sense of grace and style that is extraordinary, as well as professional.
And finally, we would like to give our most heartfelt thanks to the friends and family that had to deal with us while undertaking this work. Their unwavering patience while listening to use talk about documents in detail, ramble on about alternative ways of writing a particular sentence in a particular paragraph, and in general, rescheduling their lives, has been very helpful and above and beyond the call of duty. They also read the first drafts of this work and gave criticism that we believe have made this work better. We are truly blessed.

INTRODUCTION BY THE EDITORS
Someone, thousands of years ago, while telling an oral history or while poring over brittle and aged pages of written history, must have thought, “Something like this happened recently and look, it happened a long time ago.” Other countless millions, across the globe, must have had the exact same thought and come to the same conclusion: “History repeats itself.”
The Buddhist tradition recognized this by their thoughts of reincarnation, constantly going through a cycle of birth and rebirth until a state of Nirvana is obtained. This cycle of birth and rebirth is portrayed by the mandala, a mystic design shaped like a circle. Like the circle, the cycle of birth and rebirth is endless without beginning or end. To Buddhists, they were perfect representations of the cosmos, the potential entity and dynamic manifestation of life itself as indestructible and permanent until you reached the center—divine Buddha. Once you reached enlightenment, you ended the cycle, but the cosmos still survived, as indestructible and permanent as before. Mandalas were and still are a part of Buddhist imagery. Paintings involving mandalas survive. The most intricate mandalas are central parts of sand paintings, some of which take days, even weeks to produce. When their use is done, they are swept up and cleaned away from the floor as a representation about the impermanence of everything when compared to the cosmos. Songs in the sixties—Wheel in the Sky, Spinning Wheel—shrouded the Buddhist imagery of the mandala in psychedelic-influenced lyrics.
One of the great ironies of human history is that people ignore history. They ignore the past as just that—the past. To most, history is the worthless study of what a bunch of dead people did tens, hundreds, even tens of thousands of years ago.
Many think, “History? Why study history? That’s ancient. What can you learn from the actions of dead people? After all, we don’t make the same mistakes as others. We have better knowledge, better science, more of everything. We won’t make the same mistakes!”
Ah, many other people have fell for that line of thinking. If you have been to school and gotten a proper education (sadly, in the Editors’ opinion, we believe that most people have been given a poor education), you would remember being taught about World War I and World War II, two events that changed the world, quite literally.
World War I was a bloody and foolish war brought about by the bullets of an assassin, if one wants to summarize everything into a few words. The full story, however, speaks about poor diplomacy in a unstable region and treaties and alliances that slippery-sloped into countries declaring war because not doing so would send a bad example of “friendship” and “common beliefs,” despite not having a better reason. “We shall go to war because we signed an alliance treaty with another country and they declared war. Not joining along with them would send a wrong message about our country. This is our only reason for joining along.” Both sides used this reason to justify going into war. An entire generation of youth was slaughtered in the killing fields of Europe.
Once this folly ended, a disastrous peace treaty was signed and the more foolish said that this was “the Great War” and the “War to end all wars.” The more cynical, actually, the realists, said that there would be a backlash to the peace treaty and another war, this time, more larger and more deadly, would occur in the next twenty years and involve another entire generation of youth who was sent to do their patriotic duty.
Thanks to the Versailles Treaty and the economic strangulation it imposed on Germany and the lack of authority of the League of Nations to control Japan’s imperialistic motives, World War Two occurred. Appeasing Hitler failed and nobody bothered to check up on Japan. The result: millions upon millions of dead soldiers, the near extermination of the Jews, the destruction of entire cities and countries. Never again.
This brings the Editors to the subject of this work: the curious story of the life of David Richardson King. His story is, to repeat what has been stated earlier, is extremely curious, an odd tale that. If it truly did not happen, would make for the plot of an unbelievable Hollywood film, a story that would make for a best-selling novel that would sell millions of copies in the first week alone. But it is a true story. And there is proof. Actual evidence.
Yes, you have read this correctly. Actual evidence.
What is this fantastic tale? David Richardson King was the subject of an unusual experiment conducted by an alien race. Note we repeat the use of unusual and related synonyms that convey a sense of strangeness, as no other words can describe what Mr. King went through. This alien race, for hundred of years, was visiting Earth and walking among us humans. They were quite advanced and thanks to this technology, blended in without us noticing.
What was their experiment and what was the purpose of this experiment? Their apparent goal, indirectly, was to test their mind control technology on humans. Their main purpose was to see if they could control a person’s entire life from birth to death. They wanted to see if, by using their mind control techniques on the human could change the environment, influence this person in every single action this person did. He was the only subject. He was the central figure and everyone else was a minor player. Expendable to their purposes and intents.
For a long time, this experiment went as they planned. Mr. King did everything that he was influenced to perform. Somehow, by some unknown means, means that Mr. King does not fully explain in his documents how he managed to figure out this plot.
Unbeknownst to his alien controllers, he rebelled against their plot and managed to discover who were his tormentors. But he remained silent until he figured the time was ripe. And nobody believed him. Nobody.
Of course, it is logical to assume that nobody would believe this story. On the surface, it is perfectly preposterous. When we, the Editors, stumbled upon this story and obtained documents from the aliens and Mr.King’s estate, we still could not believe this story, despite having actual, physical proof.
Despite being put inside a mental institution for “mental insanity,” he managed to resist the aliens in his own way. As he writes in his journals, he played them into a stalemate and for such a long time, he played them to a stalemate until he pulled off a brilliant move and exposed them as who they were. Normally, this theory could not be proved. It is the classic example of the impossibility of proving a conspiracy theory that somehow, despite impossible odds, he managed to prove with spectacular results.
Could this fantastic and unbelievable story happen again? Can history repeat itself? We will let the documents speak and let you decide. In our opinion, it is quite possible since the Editors fought a lengthy legal battle to obtain these documents. The United States Government resisted such entreaties for many years. It was until the Editors won a monumental legal battle against the United States Government in the United States Supreme Court did the government give full access to the unedited documents. After all, the United States government, with the current administration’s reputation for intense secrecy, did not want the full story to come out. Who wants to admit that aliens were living on Earth for such a long time and that a human was a pawn in an alien scientist’s strange experiment? Who knows who else was part of an experiment similar to this or if this might happen again? And the scary thing? Nobody would be able to prove it…
Except for this one case. This one lone case.
One, lonely case going against billions of similar cases just like it.
He truly is one against the entire world.

Internal Memo, October 25, 1981 (Earth Time)
To: Falindros Vigortha, Head of Scientific Council
From: Banithoth Smerlon, Chief Research Scientist, Psychological Division
As the Chief Research Scientist for the Psychological Division, I would like to make a proposal in the psychological field of research. It should prove to be an interesting study, as it involves the testing of our mind manipulation techniques on a non-Itanimulli subject, namely a human.
There is a serious lack of long-term research on this subject. If we look at the history of this topic, humans have performed mind control studies, though using crude techniques. Itanimulli subjects have proven to be resistant to mind control due to the natural resistance afforded by their anatomical structure of their brains as well as the biological chemistry. Humans do not have our advanced brain structure and they lack the chemicals present in the Itanimulli’s bloodstream. In addition, our mind control techniques are very advanced compared to human techniques. Despite their biological weaknesses, if the numerous examples from human history prove to be correct, they might prove to be more resistant and more resilient and more stubborn than their biological weaknesses may suggest [Note from Editors: Apparently, the Itanimulli, like humans, have the ability to be verbose and fill their documents with double-talk and language that adds no real meaning to anything].
Of course, there are ethical considerations as well as the strict limitations imposed by the Non-Integration Treaty that was wisely put into law by Sardigon. The full research proposal has been attached so you can read it at your convenience. It is a very lengthy proposal since it covers the complex nature of the subject, the legal and ethical issues, and the safeguards that will be imposed so the Non-Integration Treaty shall not be violated. In addition, there will be safeguards so that the true nature of this research project shall not be discovered and that the identity of the Itanimulli will be discovered.

THREE
Internal Memo, October 26, 1981 (Earth Time)
To: Banithoth Smerlon, Chief Research Scientist, Psychological Division
From: Falindros Vigortha, Head of Scientific Council
I have read your research proposal (all 208 pages) and I have found it to be very interesting and well worth proposing to the full Scientific Counsel for preliminary approval. If the Scientific Counsel approves, then it will go to the Council of Elders. I suggest that you keep your presentation to the Scientific Counsel extremely brief and extremely simple.
If this proposal happens to make it to the Council of Elders, keep it very, very brief and simple. Despite the Council of Elders having the reputation for being wise and well informed Itanimulli, they are wise and well informed in ignorance and not in advanced science.

Excerpts from the Transcript of Minutes of the Scientific Council, November 1, 1981 (Earth Time)
PAGE 13
Nargath: I have read your lengthy proposal and I find it well worth implementing. It seems to cover every aspect of the proposed experiment. Now, on pages 79 to 101, you write about the ideal subject and what qualities this person should have. Since you seem to be so detailed oriented and prepared, do you have a subject in mind? After all, without the subject, this experiment cannot be run.
Smerlon: That is an excellent question. In fact, I do have the perfect subject in mind. Could you please excuse me for a minute while I get the necessary documents ready?
(The Scientific Council confers for a few seconds.)
Vigortha: We have come to a decision and that will be allowed. Please make this as quick as possible. There is a problem that arose in West Vardilos that needs our guidance to solve. [Note from Editor: We did a look into the available news archives and discovered that there were no problems in West Vardilos, political or otherwise. The only pressing problem at the time, apparently, was that the Scientific Council was running late to a dinner reservation made by an important constituent (big-money political donor) at an expensive restaurant. After all, being late to receive a check is a pressing issue. It might have not been the “problem” that Smerlon might have assumed, but it technically, was the truth. Then again, as an Itanimulli cultural matter, this would have been considered a serious breach of the Itanimulli Code of Conduct and been considered a lie. Itanimulli consider honesty the backbone to proper social behavior, as without honesty, nothing can proceed in a logical and practical manner.]
Smerlon: Thank you. It should not take that long.
(Smerlon opens up a thick folder and removes a sheaf of stapled papers. He passes them out to the members of the Scientific Council. He continues.)
Smerlon: As you can see, I have done a rather extensive and thorough search of all the recent births on Earth and done a thorough background check of the parents and the geographic locale. The ideal city that fits the demographics is Riverview, located here. (Smerlon points to a location on a holographic map using a laser pointer.) On October 24, 1981, there was a birth at the local hospital. [Note from Editors: We still do not know how they managed to obtain records from every target region. Obtaining such records take time as well as directly asking for such information. One can only assume that the Itanimulli had agents down on Earth during this time, which leads to questioning how long the Itanimulli have been focusing on Earth and how long they were on Earth before this incident.] The child fits the physical characteristics that this experiment requires. His father earned a PhD in particle physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a premier institute of learning in the sciences. His mother earned a Bachelor’s of Art from Stanford University, one of the top universities. Both have a stable family background, and are, as close to perfect as one can get for this experiment. You can study the documents at your pleasure.

Vigortha: It is now the time to vote on Smerlon’s research proposal. All in favor of Smerlon’s research proposal please raise you hand and say “Yes.”
(All nine members of the Science Council raise their hands and say “Yes”)
Vigortha: All not in favor, raise your hands and say “Nay.”
(No hands rise up and nobody says “Nay.”)
Vigortha: Smerlon, you have received unanimous approval from the Science Council. We shall send the results of this vote to the Council of Elders and our official recommendation for their review.

Official Statement from the Council of Elders, November 16, 1981 (Earth Time)
To: Banithoth Smerlon, Chief Research Scientist, Psychological Division
From: Council of Elders
The Council of Elders grant full approval of your experiment proposal “Mind Control Study of Non-Itanimulli Using Itanimulli Mind Control Techniques.” Never in the history of the Council of Elders has there been such a thorough proposal. Also, in the history of the Council of Elders, there never has been any kind of proposal that has been approved unanimously. This speaks highly of how well your proposal has been received by the Council of Elders.
You are to be commended for these great accomplishments as well as your scientific knowledge and your quest for expanding scientific horizons.
Go forward with your proposal as soon as possible. You shall have full control over your proposal so long as you strictly adhere to all applicable laws and standards. This shall be determined yearly by sending regular status reports and by following the enclosed guidelines suggested by the Scientific Council and the Council of Morality, Ethics, and Justice.
ENCL: Guidelines
[Note from Editor: This is an interesting memo from the Council of Elders. Our research shows that most approvals take at least a year, if not more. This only took a little over two weeks, which is amazingly quick for Itanimulli standards. We suspect the meal must have been well worth spending extra time in what must have been a dull meeting.]
